I was raised in a household with two cultures. Our parents, bilingual Spanish and English speakers, founded an English school. As a family we worked diligently to build the business. From an early age, I recognized the capability of language to transform lives, the dedication it requires to master a new language, and the delight that comes with that accomplishment. Fueled by the passion for language and culture nurtured in my youth, I have endeavored ever since to gain knowledge of people around the globe through their native languages.
I studied with Spaniards at the University of Madrid as part of my degree in Spanish literature at the University of California, and found work on a farm in France upon graduation. I attended the University of Dijon and the University of Geneva before moving to Berlin to study German and eventually to Italy and Greece for work.
Following four years in Europe, I obtained a Master's degree from the Middlebury Institute of International Studies where I studied Chinese Economic Development. The Institute recommended me for a Lecturer position at the Foreign Trade Institute in Shanghai, China. I taught communication and literature courses there for two years. Following my tenure in China, I took another Lecturer position at the Mara Technology Institute in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia for two more years. There I prepared Muslim students to communicate effectively in a variety of academic contexts prior to attending the school of engineering at the University of Texas, Austin.
Upon returning to the US, I attended Stanford University and completed a Ph.D. in International Comparative Education focusing on the Anthropology of Communication. I took a position as Director of Multilingual Education in a 9000 student school district then transitioned to the private sector when Intel hired me to conduct a global workforce development study that measured communicative competence among technicians at their factories worldwide. For over 20 years since, I have served as a communication trainer, consultant and coach to corporations and leaders across industries including with Google as Pedagogy Lead on a second language acquisition, AI research and product development team.
